Ladipo Market is the beating heart of Nigeria’s automotive industry. It is a place of relentless energy, where thousands of technicians possess the incredible skill required to keep the nation’s vehicles moving. But amidst the clatter of engines and the scent of diesel, there is a hidden cost: the safety of the hands doing the work.
We recently took to the streets of Ladipo to explore what protection truly means to these craftsmen. Our mission was simple but vital: introduce PRO.TECT and Nitrex gloves, educate on the importance of hand safety, and most importantly listen.
The Reality on the Ground
Despite the high-risk environment filled with sharp metal, corrosive fluids, and heavy machinery the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) has historically been low. Many technicians have spent years working bare-handed, accepting cuts and chemical exposure as “part of the job.”
However, our hands-on demonstrations revealed a shifting tide. By putting 5,400 PRO.TECT safety gloves directly into the hands 1,000 auto artisans, we uncovered three game-changing insights:
- The Right Tool for the Job: Technicians overwhelmingly preferred Nitrex for heavy-duty mechanical overhauls due to its superior durability. Conversely, PRO.TECT emerged as the favorite for lighter, precision-based tasks where tactile sensitivity is key.
- The Openness to Change: While many had never used professional-grade gloves before, the appetite for change was palpable. Once they experienced the grip and security of the gloves, the “old way” of doing things began to look outdated.
- Safety as Status: Perhaps the most profound discovery was that PPE was seen as more than just a shield it was viewed as a mark of professionalism. Wearing quality gear signalled expertise and dignity, transforming the technician from a “roadside mechanic” into a specialized professional.

More Than Just a Demo
This visit wasn’t just about showcasing products; it was about forging a connection between safety and the dignity of labor. When a technician puts on a pair of Uni-medical gloves, they aren’t just protecting their skin; they are investing in their career and their long-term health.
